What could co-productive urban development look like in a part of Frankfurt am Main that looks back on a decades-long history of democratic participation, civic engagement and long planning processes? What is the role to be played by the various artists and initiatives active in the open space of the campus and making interim use of the vacant buildings around it? What can be achieved through interaction between the various stakeholders, such as the state of Hessen, the City of Frankfurt and civil society at large? How could a project – initiated by the Offenes Haus der Kulturen (Open House of Cultures, Oha!), Making Frankfurt, the City’s Cultural Office and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences – support the engagement of different initiatives and cultural professionals on site and thereby promote the co-creative development of the campus?
The Vision 31 project, funded by the EU’s New European Bauhaus funding line, began its work in March 2024 with these key questions in mind. For Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, direct involvement in the project team of Vision 31 offered an exciting opportunity to give students first-hand insight into a current urban development project in a number of seminars and to work with them on various issues related to the Cultural Campus. This led to new contacts, unexpected ideas and an exchange across various professions, disciplines and, ultimately, intentions.
This brochure summarises some of the student work produced in 2024 and aims to serve as an inspiration and impetus for all those involved in the Cultural Campus. Its aim is not to outline a series of new visions, but above all to build on what the Cultural Campus already (re)presents and to enable further joint development of this very special place. Among others students of the U!REKA Lab Urban Commons were working on commons-oriented research projects on campus.
