BIP Urban Phoenix: Brownfields Reborn
As part of the series of Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes realised in Ostrava in collaboration with the U!REKA Lab: Urban Commons, a new edition is planned for 2027:

The number of places is limited, we can accommodate a maximum of 20 students from partner universities (3/4 students per university), so a quick response would be preferable to ensure the place. Following confirmation of your interest, we will provide further information regarding the nomination process and, where applicable, the Inter-Institutional Agreement (IIA). Important deadlines:
30 October 2026 – Expression of interest (sent to marcela.maturova@vsb.cz)
15 December 2026 – Student nominations
12 February 2027 – Student online applications
In addition, we warmly welcome academic staff from partner institutions to contribute to the programme by delivering lectures and engaging with participating students
Past BIP exchanges focussed on the following topics:
2026: Alternative application of waste materials to reduce carbon footprint – the path to a circular economy. Building materials history, present and future.
2025: How to understand brownfields – threat or opportunity (Faculty of Civil Engineering). Students’ tasks focussed on the following three challenges and locations – Skip Tower František, Bravantice Castle, Agricultural brownfields in protected landscape area Poodří.
2023: Common Regeneration – How can urban commons transform an industrial and mining region? Case study: Ostrava (Faculty of Civil Engineering). Students’ tasks focussing on the three locations with three different social and technical challenges – searching for potential solutions using commons principles.
